"The Ane You Know" is a vocal by the American rock band Alice in Chains, and the kickoff single from the band's 6th studio album, Rainier Fog, released on August 24, 2018.[eight] The single was released via streaming on May three, 2018, accompanied by an official music video.[1] "The One You Know" spent 17 weeks on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart and peaked at No. ix.[9]
Origin [edit]
Alice In Chains' guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell explained the song to SiriusXM:
It'southward actually ambitious, information technology's got a super-aggro riff. I was thinking kind of a [David] Bowie when I was writing it a little scrap. So, it's got kind of a metal 'Fame' shuffle to it about. Information technology's a good aggro riff, and information technology'south got the archetype Alice in Chains chorus, with a weird kind of trippy heart part.[5]
Asked most the inspiration behind the vocal during an intimate session for Chicago radio station 101WKQX at The Sound Lounge on May 15, 2018, Cantrell said:
It'due south always really hard for me to lay out what it is. Cause I'd rather you tell me… and not even tell me, it be whatever it is to y'all. And I'm too a little selfish too, I similar to go on what it is for me equally well. The cool part of songwriting, I think, and the challenge of it is taking something personal that is internal and making it universally translatable to everybody. Nosotros're all human beings, so we're not that far apart, and we're all pretty much the aforementioned, basically. So if yous experience something and you put it out in a way that's not completely and then spelled out, I think information technology'southward easier for people to brand information technology their ain.[10]
For vocalist and rhythm guitarist William DuVall, the vocal is nearly "how things aren't e'er what they seem".[11]
Release and reception [edit]
During Alice in Chains' concert at the Firm of Dejection in Boston on Apr 28, 2018, guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell appear that a new vocal would be coming out "pretty soon".[12] On April thirty, 2018, Alice in Chains posted a cryptic 15-2d teaser video with no sound on their social media pages.[13] Another 16-second clip was shared on May 1,[14] and an 18-second prune with the caption "05.04.eighteen #AIC" was shared on May 2.[xv]

Later that day (May 3) at around 11pm PST, the single was available for streaming and download worldwide via Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Apple Music and Google Play.[1]
Classic Stone called the song "an irresistible blend of pummelling guitar chops, hazy grunge swathes and charismatic vocals. Just what they [Alice in Chains] practise all-time. Proficient to take 'em back".[18] Salute Magazine said; "the alt-metal warriors deliver a bad-ass monstrosity with larger than life vocals detonating ear drums in all directions. Not only does "The I Y'all Know," secure that this album will be a promising one, but their intensifying guitar riffs, heavy-heart-pounding sound, and nostalgic fashion further proves that even 20 years subsequently, they still got it."[19] AXS stated; "Jerry Cantrell has always maintained the position that Alice in Chains was more than a metal band than a grunge band and the guitar in this song leans more to the side of metal. However, with Cantrell's vocalisation, this is a pure throw-back Alice in Chains track, dirty and bluesy."[20]
The song peaked at No. one on Amazon's All-time Sellers in Stone,[21] and at No. 21 on Amazon'south Height 100 Paid Songs.[22]
